FEATURE SALON NOVEMBER EDITION
For as long as Barbie could remember, she has always enjoyed the Beauty & Fashion Industry. Growing up in New York during the 80’s, she was inspired by the likes of Madonna, Boy George and David Bowie.
"During my teenage years the underground music scene is where I found myself most inspired. This is where I got to have the most fun creating my own trends. My friends and I would practice Hair & Make-up on each other and that is when I knew my hobby had become my passion."
As an adult, Barbie decided to pursue a career in banking because she was told there was no future in the Hair Industry. She worked in banking for a few years but felt it was lacking passion and inspiration. She decided to quit her job in banking and enroll in Cosmetology School.
"It has been 8 years since I started my journey in the Hair & Beauty Industry and 5 years since I opened NOVA Hair Studio. I feel extremely fortunate to have found a career that I love and I am blessed to have an amazing and talented staff working alongside me."
As always, we hope this interview will motivate you, inspire you, and encourage you, to continue to share your love and passion for the beauty industry. Enjoy!
1. What has been one of the hardest things to overcome since becoming a salon owner?
It’s been an amazing journey, full of hard work, late nights and many challenges.
I think the hardest thing for me has been Life/Work Balance. Being a Salon Owner, Mentor and Hair Stylist can be very demanding, and at times I find myself forgetting to shut work off after hours. Thankfully, I have an amazing husband who supports me in life and in business. It also helps to have a great team of Artists behind me who are always willing to help in all areas when needed. It also helps to have a great team of Artists behind me who are always willing to help in all areas when needed. At NOVA Hair Studio, our superior approach to customer service is what sets our progressive studio high above the rest. We are committed to working as a team to provide the highest quality of service possible to our clients.
2. Tell me why you chose to use more natural or organic based hair color and salon products?
I chose more natural/organic hair products because I think it is very important to offer healing products in the salon because we are chemically altering the guests hair which can be very damaging. My guests have piece of mind knowing that I will actually Heal & Protect their hair when I am Decolorizing their hair or Permanently coloring their hair.
3. What piece of advice would you give to other salon owners who are looking to open a hair salon?
The most important thing when opening a Salon is to have a clear vision and mission statement. It is very important everyone understands what you stand for and why.
4. What are the benefits to both the client and the stylists when using a more natural/organic based line of hair color?
The key benefit is that there is zero damage to the hair. This is possible due to our Keratin Healing System which contains Keratin Amino Acids, Meadowfoam Flower Seed Complex and UV Protection. Through these systems the Amino Acids are actually embedded deep inside the hair so we are able to heal the hair from within, so the external texture becomes sooth, shiny & healthier.
5. You and your team have quite a presence on social media. Can you give us some tips on how to utilize these platforms to attract new business?
It is important to engage with your audience so they know their voice is being heard. Besides our Facebook business pages and Instagram page, We also have a Facebook Group for our guests. This is a great way for us to respond quickly because all of our Artists can answer questions, post pictures and offer guest incentives.
6. Give me some tips on time management. Working behind the chair and running a successful salon can be overwhelming. What have you found works best for you in terms of managing both?
Having a strong support system is what helps me the most. It is important to meet with your Sales Reps and Brand Consultants on a regular basis. Planning out your Education Calendar and Client Incentives will help keep you organized.
7. Some of the misconception with a more natural/organic based line of hair color is that it may not be as vibrant or the results may not last as long. What has been your experience with these two areas of concern?
My experience with L'ANZA Healing Color is that the color is actually true to tone and more vibrant than leading brands. L'ANZA is able to offer these results because of their Keratin Healing System and advanced technologies. Our Color line actually heals the hair from the inside out by using nano technology and amino acids along with the exclusive Flower Shield Complex, which retains color vibrancy up to 107% longer.
8.Describe the importance of strong leadership within your salon business, and how you continue to inspire and motivate your team on a regular basis?
At NOVA Hair Studio we believe in professional growth and encourage education and in house advancement. By working as a team, we believe that is when true passion and inspiration happens. Our Artists have attended many Advanced Training Classes with some Industry Leaders like Tabatha Coffey, Leah Freeman & Kim Vo. Once our education workshops are complete, we then assign Mentor Educators that assist in the professional growth and development of our entry level associates. This process helps develop strong leadership because everyone has an active role the success of our Team.
