COACHING YOUR TEAM TO SUCCESS
The most successful salon businesses have a great leader. A great leader is one that coaches, inspires, and encourages their team. A leader has a strong vision and knows how to execute it. They empathize with others, make decisions based on what's best for their business, and most importantly they help build their team beyond the chair. When it comes to growth and expanding your business, think about all the time you spend on social media, marketing, and advertising. Don't get me wrong. These things are all very important, but nothing helps grow your salon business more than your own team. They are the people that stand by you every day. I am a firm believer in “The key to a successful business is taking the the time to personally invest in your team.”
Let’s talk about the 5 steps to coaching your team to success.
I encourage you to meet 1 hour, once a month. Consistency is key in executing a great coaching session. I recommend you set up all your meetings in advance. If possible, choose the same day and time for each team member and put it in your calendar for 6-12 months in advance.
Utilize these meetings to set short term and long term goals, both personal and professional. This is a great time to have their numbers printed out, service, retail, head count, average sale. Go over the benchmarks, set their goals, and every month you check in on their progress. Goal setting not only helps encourage and inspire your team, but it also gives them something to work toward. Most of all, when they achieve their goals, It gives them a sense of accomplishment. .
Spend time getting to know them on a personal level. Ask them what motivates them, what excites them. What they like to do on their off time. Spending quality time with your team builds trust and loyalty. When your team can see you are taking the time to invest in their future, it makes them feel appreciated. And when people feel appreciated, they want to work harder.
Ask for feedback. Ask your team for feedback on how you can help them reach their goals. Ask them what you can do to be a better leader. Include your team. Ask for their input on salon promotions, or events. I can assure you your team has great ideas. Sometimes you just have to give them the opportunity to share them. Listen and respond. One of the greatest qualities of a great leader is to be a great listener. When your team tells you they need something, listen to them. You don't have to agree with everything, however if they know you are listening to their needs, and you respond, they will feel so much more valued.
Personally investing in your team plays a huge role in growing your salon business. Equally important, is finding people that want to invest in themselves. It's very important your team members meet you halfway. Their level of commitment is key. At the end of the day, your team is a direct reflection of who you are. They represent your business and your salon brand. I encourage you to try some of these strategies with your team. Have a one on one with them once a month ,ask them for feedback, and take time to set goals and benchmarks. Do this for 3 months and watch the change in your salon business unfold. Your reward? Being a part of something bigger than yourself, watching your team reach their goals, become successful, and become a great leader themselves.
